Head Coach Tim Holt, Jr. enters the 2016 Coweta Tiger campaign with high hopes and determination as he begins his career and at the same time takes his Tigers into a new look season moving to 5A-3 after years of action in 5A-4.
The Tigers are the defending champion of 5A-4 and tied for the title two years ago with the Collinsville Cardinals.
Coach Holt is the third straight hire from the ranks of the 6A Broken Arrow Tigers. He follows Stephen “Bubba” Burcham and Jay Wilkinson, both former assistants at Broken Arrow.
Most of his staff will be familiar to Tiger fans as Pete Carter continues as defensive coordinator, Bob Poole will coach safeties, Carl Smith has the cornerbacks, Alex Elliott will coach wide receivers and David McGrath has the defensive line.
Joining Coach Holt will be veteran coach and his father, Tim Holt, Sr. working with the offensive line and new coach Eric Baker will join the staff as the running backs coach.
Following are brief background profiles of each of the varsity coaches:
Tim Holt, Jr.: Graduate of Kellyville High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant where he was a two-year starter at wide receiver and played in the NCAA Division II national playoffs in 2004. With 10 years coaching experience including stops at Barnsdall, Mounds, Bartlesville and the past six years with the Broken Arrow Tigers as wide receivers coach.
Pete Carter: Begins his second year as defense coordinator, after six years in the same position at Tulsa Cascia Hall. Coach Carter graduated from Russellville, Ark. High School in 2000 and played college ball at Arkansas Tech. He previously coached at Tulsa Edison and Tulsa Hale.
David McGrath: Veteran member of the Tiger staff, he begins his 12th season with the defense, coaching defensive linemen after four years at Broken Arrow. Played at Northeastern A.&M., Miami and Northeastern State University, Tahlequah as a free safety.
Carl Smith: Begins his third season with the Tiger defense after six years at Broken Arrow. He is a 1987 graduate of Tulsa Booker T. Washington High School in 1987. He played his post high school football in the U.S. Air Force. Coach Smith will coach defensive cornerbacks.
Bob Pool: Starting his third season after serving as head coach at Circle High School in Towanda, Kansas for five years. He coached at Cleveland for four years and is a graduate of Savannah High School and also played his college ball at Southeastern State in Durant. Pool will coach defensive safeties.
Alex Elliott: Graduate of Coweta High School in 2006 as a record setting quarterback and played his college football at Northeastern State in Tahlequah. He begins his third season with the Tigers after one year as a graduate assistant. His senior season he carried the football 200 times for 991 yards and 15 touchdowns and finished with 98 points. Elliott will coach wide receivers.
Tim Holt, Sr.: Joins his son’s staff after a full career serving as both head coach and assistant. A 1977 graduate of Broken Arrow High School, Coach Holt played defensive end at Northeastern State in Tahlequah. Past coaching includes Sapulpa, defensive coordinator at Noble and back to Sapulpa before being the defensive coordinator at Kellyville. Head coaching positions were two years at Tulsa Hale and four years at Mounds before spending seven years at Catoosa as defensive coordinator. He will coach offensive linemen.
Eric Baker: Begins his football career working with Tiger running backs after working as a graduate assistant with the Coweta baseball team last Spring. Baker is a graduate of Fort Gibson High School where he holds records for most interceptions in a game (4) and most receptions in a game (14). He played wide receiver, defensive back, and also returned kicks and punts. He attended Connors State College and Rogers State University playing baseball.
