The Tulsa-based Square 1 Theatrics is up for a Tony Award this year, as co-producers of the musical “Waitress.”
Based on the film of the same name, “Waitress” has received four nominations, including best musical, best score for composer Sara Bareilles, best actress in a musical for Jessie Mueller and best actor in a featured role for Christopher Fitzgerald.
Unsurprisingly, the juggernaut that is “Hamilton” dominated this year’s Tony Award nominations with a record 16, besting the previous record of 15 nominations for “The Producers” and “Billy Elliot: The Musical.”
“The Producers” holds the record for most Tony Award wins with 12.
Also nominated for best musical are “Bright Star,” “School of Rock – The Musical” and “Shuffle Along, or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.”
Square 1 Theatrics earned a Tony Award in 2012 as co-producers of the revival of Stephen Schwarz’s “Pippin,” which won the Tony Award for best revival of a musical.
