OKLAHOMA CITY — The longtime director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control unexpectedly announced his retirement Monday.

R. Darrell Weaver, 53, has worked for the bureau for more than 28 years. He started as an agent in 1987 and has served as director since September 2006.

“I have fought the good fight and honestly could not have fought harder for this agency and its mission,” he told employees in an email Monday afternoon. “But the time has come and new opportunities have come to light.”
