Law enforcement is investigating after a partially burned and severely beaten body was found in a Pittsburg County cemetery east of McAlester on Thursday morning.

Pittsburg County Sheriff Chris Morris said deputies were called about 8 a.m. after a man, believed to be between 40 and 55 years old, was found dead in the road inside the Red Oaks Cemetery, about nine miles east of McAlester and about a mile north of U.S. 270.

Morris said the man had no identification, and the state medical examiner’s office will help identify the body.

It’s believed the body ended up there sometime late in the night based on neighbors’ statements, Morris said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reportedly assisted in processing the crime scene, and Morris said the District 18 Violent Crimes Task Force is also involved in the investigation.
