A Tulsa man was arrested early Sunday after he brought an unresponsive 1-year-old reportedly showing signs of sexual and physical trauma to an area hospital, where she later died.
Cody Alan Johnson, 30, and his girlfriend, who is the baby’s mother, took 1-year-old Sawyer Paige Jefferson to Saint Francis Hospital’s emergency room Saturday, according to Johnson’s arrest and booking report.
The child was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest upon arrival. Doctors also noted she had numerous contusions on her face, as well as bruising and bleeding from her vagina and rectum, according to the arrest and booking report.
The report states the extent of internal trauma to the child’s genitals is consistent with “extensive forcible penetration.”
Doctors placed Sawyer on life support, but she never regained consciousness. She was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 7:05 p.m., police said.
Her death is Tulsa’s 55th homicide of 2015.
Both Johnson and the baby’s mother said the baby was in Johnson’s custody at Shadow Mountain Condos, 6359 S. 80th East Ave., during the time she sustained the injuries, according to the arrest report.
The couple reportedly told police the child received the injuries when she slipped on her pajamas and fell on a toy, the report indicates.
Detectives brought Johnson in for questioning, and he was later arrested on child abuse after a felony conviction and child sexual abuse after a felony conviction complaints, according to jail records.
After Sawyer’s death, police added a complaint of first-degree murder.
Johnson is being held in Tulsa Jail. Johnson has previous felony convictions for knowingly concealing/receiving stolen property and driving under the influence, according to court records.
