24 years ago this week, former New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle died at age 63.

Mantle retired from Major League Baseball 50 years ago, on March 1, 1969. When he retired, he was the Yankees all-time leader in games played with 2,401, which was broken by Derek Jeter eight years ago this month, on Aug. 29, 2011.

Before he hit the major leagues, he was an Oklahoma native, born in Spavinaw and graduate of Commerce High School.
