PRAGUE — The call was sobering. The voice on the other end belonged to a counselor from a mental health clinic in South Carolina who told police she had interviewed a boy who lived in Prague with his mother in 2017 and attended Prague Middle School.

The boy told the counselor a teacher named Bill Smith had raped him twice while he attended the school, according to an incident report obtained by The Oklahoman.

Lincoln County District Attorney Allen Grubb said Friday the March 14 call led to an investigation of Smith, 66, who died May 3 when his pickup collided with a tractor-trailer.

A second boy, this one in foster care, then came forward with similar allegations, prompting an interview with Smith the night before the collision, the district attorney said. Investigators met with Smith for three hours and determined “he didn’t need to be around children anymore,” Grubb said.
