Law enforcement officers shot and killed a 27-year-old man at a Poteau convenience store early Tuesday after they say he refused to drop a knife he was holding to a clerk’s throat.

A LeFlore County sheriff’s deputy and a Poteau police officer responded about 4:45 a.m. to the E-Z Mart convenience store in the 1200 block of North Broadway Street and saw the man holding the clerk at knife point, according to an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation news release.

Each fired one shot, and the man, later identified as Jaquan Derrick Diijon Thompson, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release states.

The clerk, a 44-year-old woman, was unharmed.

OSBI is investigating the shooting, and agents are seeking information about Thompson’s relatives.

Family members or those who know his family are asked to contact the Poteau Police Department at 918-647-8620 or the OSBI at 800-522-8017 or tips@osbi.ok.gov.
