MIAMI, Okla. — A former Commerce Public Schools coach waived his right to a jury trial and pleaded guilty Wednesday to raping a 17-year-old female high school student.
Thomas Alan Fenderson, 44, of Miami, entered the pleas to three counts of second-degree rape in Ottawa County District Court.
Fenderson pleaded guilty without an agreement with the district attorney’s office.
Rogers Hughes, assistant district attorney, said he is requesting that Fenderson serve a 15-year-sentence.
The teen reportedly told friends that she had had a crush on Fenderson since sixth grade, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Fenderson confessed to a consensual sexual relationship with the student, the affidavit states.
School employees can be prosecuted for second-degree rape until a student is age 20.
A pre-sentence investigation was ordered, and Fenderson will return to court July 24 for sentencing.
Fenderson resigned from the school district last May.
He is free on $75,000 bond.
