NORMAN — A week off didn't cure Oklahoma's problems.
Jalen Hurts threw for three touchdowns, rushed for two more and Kennedy Brooks rushed for 131 yards, but OU nearly blew a 21-point second half lead.
The Sooners, ranked No. 9 in the first College Football Playoff top 25, were coming off a 48-41 loss at Kansas State two weeks ago.
OU's defense seemed to take that loss personally early, holding Iowa State to 8 yards on its first two series. But after going ahead 28-7, the Sooners could never put the Cyclones away.
Iowa State turned the ball over on downs on a fourth-and-goal play with 7:37 left in the game down 14, then cut the lead to 42-35 a series later on a 33-yard pass from Brock Purdy to Sean Shaw Jr.
The Cyclones got within one on their final series after a Hurts interception, scoring on a 13-yard pass from Purdy to Charlie Kolar with 24 seconds left, but Iowa State's two-point try was intercepted.
ESPN College GameDay will broadcast live from Waco next week, the network announced Saturday evening.
