Impressive debuts: Drillers manager Scott Hennessey praised the Double-A debuts over the weekend of 23-year-old pitchers Victor Gonzalez and Jordan Sheffield, who were promoted to Tulsa from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. Hennessey said both had “electric stuff.”
Gonzalez, a lefty who had a 1.65 ERA in eight games at Rancho, allowed two runs in 4 ⅔ innings Sunday. Sheffield, a right-hander who had a 2.60 ERA with seven saves at Rancho, pitched 1⅔ shutout innings Saturday.
“Gonzalez had a three-pitch mix, threw 97 (mph) and gave us a quality start,” Hennessey said. “Sheffield had a power fastball, attacked hitters and worked both sides of the plate well. He made an adjustment with his changeup and threw his breaking ball for strikes. I look for more of the same from him. His delivery was under control and he threw strikes.”
Strong relief: Tulsa’s Andre Scrubb retired all seven batters he faced Sunday for his 11th consecutive outing without allowing an earned run. Hennessey said, “He had a three-pitch mix, he added a changeup and kept them off balance.”
Streaking: Cody Thomas’ hitting streak ended at 10 games as he went 0-for-4. He is tied with Logan Landon for the Drillers’ top hitting streak this season. Angelo Mora homered in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games and is batting .353 with eight RBIs during that span.
