2017 champion/team to beat

Shattuck has been dominant all season with its closest game a 44-14 win over defending Class C champion Tipton in the opener. Since then, the Indians have played only two games that weren’t shortened by the mercy rule. Shattuck has won nine state titles since 2003.

Top contenders

Davenport: The second-ranked Bulldogs, whose last state title was in 2015, have outscored their past five opponents 282-20. Senior quarterback Stevie Orr has passed for 2,112 yards, rushed for 523 and accounted for 37 touchdowns.

Regent Prep: The No. 3 Rams have outscored their past four opponents 229-8. Their defense, with five shutouts, is much improved this season. Braden Gilbert has passed for 2,176 yards and 37 TDs. Jack Wright, who is the state’s receptions leader over the past three years, has 36 catches for 995 yards and 19 TDs.

Looking ahead

Shattuck and No. 4 Dewar are on course to meet in the quarterfinals, as are Regent and Laverne, which is ranked No. 6 and looking for its fourth state title in seven years. Shattuck and Davenport could meet in the semifinals.
