Ryan Gendron

Bishop Kelley • SS • Senior

Had key, two-run double in first-round win over Duncan in the state tournament. Batted .370 over three seasons and was part of a state-semifinal team as a sophomore. Averaged 21.3 points as a senior basketball player and received All-State recognition. Named first-team shortstop in District 5A-4. Son of Jonnie Gendron, a former Comets standout and University of Tulsa basketball player. Signed with Oklahoma State.

Raymond Farrell

Union • P • Senior

After playing football and baseball for two years, focused on pitching as a senior and was the rock of the staff in Redskins’ 6A title run. Went 8-0 while allowing only 11 earned runs in 54 innings. Pitched shutouts against Enid in the regional tournament and Choctaw in the state tournament. Scattered eight hits in a 10-1 regular-season win over Owasso. Also caught and threw out six baserunners. As a junior, played at outside linebacker for Redskins’ 6A Division I football champs. Signed with Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College.

Kade Keith

Verdigris • P/2B • Senior

Was nearly unhittable on the mound, helping Cards reach the 4A semifinals. Went 10-0 with 97 strikeouts in 48⅔ innings and allowed only four earned runs. Also batted .381 with 41 RBIs. Pitched two no-hitters and had nine consecutive outings with eight or more strikeouts. Winning pitcher in relief in comeback win over Heritage Hall in the state tournament. Batted .390 over four seasons and was part of a 3A championship team as a sophomore; third of coach Brian Keith’s sons to win at least one state title.

Coaches of the Year

Shawn Newkirk • Union

Said the third 6A state title in his 13 seasons spoke volumes about his players’ character: “They kept battling and finding ways to win. Their resilience was impressive.” A 1981 Putnam West graduate, played baseball at Northeastern A&M and Northeastern State. Spent 10 years as a Union assistant before taking the helm in 2006. Has a 316-157 overall record.

Brian Begnel • Bishop Kelley

Retired from coaching after leading Comets to the 5A state title. A 1979 Kelley graduate, split his 35 seasons between his alma mater and Holland Hall, where he was 306-174 as baseball coach (1990-07). Returned to Kelley in 2007-08, assisted former Comets coach Scott Ellis on the 2011 championship team, and went 62-33 in three years as head coach.
